Vehicle LoadingDifficulty: 2/5
You’re driving a loaded van on a rural road and come to a level crossing with no lights or barriers. There’s a railway telephone by the crossing. Because your van is heavily loaded, what should you do before driving over the tracks?
Explanation
The Highway Code Rule 297 states that at a level crossing with no lights you must stop, look both ways and listen before you cross. If there is a railway telephone, you must always use it to contact the signal operator to make sure it is safe to cross, and then inform them again once you are clear. This applies regardless of how heavily your vehicle is loaded. Relying only on your own observation, or trying to keep moving because of your load, is unsafe and does not follow the Code.
