Rules for users of powered wheelchairs and mobility scootersRule 46

Mobility Scooter Motorway Restrictions

This rule is a legal requirement
These vehicles MUST NOT be used on motorways (see Rule 253). They should not be used on unrestricted dual carriageways where the speed limit exceeds 50 mph (80 km/h) but if they are used on these dual carriageways, they MUST have a flashing amber beacon. A flashing amber beacon should be used on all other dual carriageways (see Rule 220).

💡Example

Powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters must not be driven on motorways and should avoid dual carriageways with speed limits over 50 mph unless equipped with a flashing amber beacon. For example, if you need to use your mobility scooter to cross a dual carriageway with a speed limit of 60 mph, ensure it has a flashing amber beacon to alert other drivers to your presence.
